Establish Bioavailability of a Protein-Fatty Acid Complex Researchers at Teagasc had previously demonstrated that structural changes in α-LA and oleic acid occur in simulated in vitro digestion, that lead to the formation of a bioactive complex. The next step was to establish if a similar bioactive complex forms in vivo in the stomach in man. The study was designed by a clinical studies team (gastroenterologist, human studies manager, nurses and scientists) in consultation with Teagasc and Ethics Board approval was granted. The clinical study aimed to establish if bioactive complexes were formed in the stomach, by aspirating small samples from the stomach following ingestion of the product.
