Whole Foods Market To Offer MSC-Certified, Harpoon-caught Swordfish
Whole Foods Market, a Texas-based retailer of natural and organic foods, will now offer Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified, fresh, harpoon-caught swordfish from Nova Scotia this summer. This swordfish will be available during July and August.
The retailer claims that its port buyers will hand select and grade swordfish as it arrives at the dock, and will choose high grade white meat, with a firm texture and bright blood lines, which signify optimum temperature and handling.
Fishermen use a harpoon technique, which allows them to target mature fish one by one, virtually eliminating bycatch or harm to ocean habitats. The swordfish arrives at stores quickly, with a goal of 48 hours from dock to store.
The government of Canada worked directly with fishermen and Whole Foods Market to limit the season to three, five-day intervals, ensuring an increased shelf life and plentiful swordfish.
MSC has strict standards and rigorous third-party certification, including chain of custody, which verifies identification is in place to ensure that certified fishery products are not mixed with uncertified fishery products.
Dan Rand, a port buyer of Whole Foods Market, said: To get this many fishermen on board with the MSC fishery sustainability program is no easy task and is a testament to their commitment to the future of the fishery. Whole Foods Market cares about the sustainability of this fishery and is proud to offer this swordfish.
