Tesco, Britain's leading supermarket chain, plans to sell square-shaped watermelons in stores across the UK from October.
The retailer claims the melons, which are currently available in Japan, will be the first of their kind to be sold in the UK, and they will help consumers combat the problems of storing the fruit which can roll around in the fridge.
According to industry press reports, Tesco hopes to sell the melons for no more than GBP5, compared to the inflated Japanese price of GBP45. The fruit is being grown exclusively for Tesco by one of the retailer's regular suppliers in Brazil.
The fruit is grown by placing a wooden box around the melon as it grows; the fruit then swells naturally to fill the shape making it easier to store and eat.
