J Sainsbury Plc, the UK's third largest grocery retailer, has announced that Roger Burnley will join the company's operating board as supply chain director, to replace Lawrence Christensen. Mr Burnley will become Sainsbury's third supply chain director in as many years.
Mr Burnley, 39, joins the company from discount clothing and homewears retailer Matalan, where he is currently supply chain director. He spent his early career in retail management and buying at B&Q before joining Asda/Walmart, where he held a number of positions before becoming supply chain director in 2001.
Mr Burnley will initially work alongside the current supply chain director, Lawrence Christensen, who joined Sainsbury's in September 2004 for a set term of 16 months. This term has been extended and Mr Christensen will continue to support the management team in an advisory capacity until December 2006.
Sainsbury's chief executive, Justin King, said, "Lawrence has been an integral part of the team and has made a massive contribution to improving our supply chain and the service we provide our customers. I am delighted that he has agreed to stay on and support the business through the next year."
