Philippines imposes ban on livestock imports from Paraguay

FBR Staff Writer Published 14 February 2012

Philippines has imposed a temporary ban on the imports of cattle or livestock from Paraguay following the outbreak of the food-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the Latin American country.

The ban was announced by the Department of Agriculture (DA) after the World Animal Health Organization confirmed the outbreak, reported the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the temporary ban on the imports of animal products and by-products from Paraguay will remain until there is a confirmation that the outbreak has been contained.

The ban is intended to protect herds from being infected as well as to avoid the imports of unsafe meat products.

Philippines has also temporarily banned importation of domestic and wild birds, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen, from Melbourne and Victoria, Australia, following a bird flu outbreak.
