Nestlé achieves 7.4% sugar reduction across confectionery portfolio

Nestlé said that its UK and Irish products have seen a sugar reduction of more than 2.6 billion teaspoons and more than 60 billion calories in the last three years.

The company has credited its ongoing innovation and reformulation program for achieving the milestone.

Nestle also revealed that since 2015, more than 60 billion calories have been stripped out from Nestlé UK & Ireland’s portfolio.

In February, the company said that it will bring in a 10% reduction in sugar content across its confectionery products by the end of this year. Nestle claimed that its sugar reduction initiative has already reached a 7.4% reduction till date.

Among the initiatives it had taken up to reach its goal, Nestle said that it has increased the milk and cocoa content in KitKat to make up for the reduced sugar quantity.

The company also made milk as the main ingredient in Milkybar while launching 30% less sugar versions of Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles and Rowntree’s Randoms.

Nestlé breakfast cereals is also striving to cut down average sugar content by 10% for all its product range by the end of 2018.

In last July, Nestlé announced that it will cut down about 225 million fewer teaspoons of sugar in its breakfast cereals range by means of reformulation and by increasing the share of lower sugar variants.

The company claimed that Nestlé Breakfast Cereals in the UK had brought down its average sugar content by 15% across its portfolio since 2010.

Nestlé UK & Ireland CEO Stefano Agostini said: “Our work towards these achievements is actually as much about taste as it is about reducing sugar and calories.

“It is not as simple as just removing sugar from a product, the skill is in making that product taste just as good or, ideally, better. We have an unrivalled research and development network across the globe that makes this possible.”

Nestlé’s claims follow the latest appeal from UK’s Public Health England, which asks food manufactures to cut down calories in their products by 20% by 2024, to tackle obesity problems in the country.
