Kraft Foods has planned to reduce sodium by an average of 10% across its North American portfolio over the next two years. The company said that this amounts to the elimination of around 10 million pounds or around 750 million teaspoons of salt from some of its North American foods.
The company's aims to call for sodium to be lowered in a number of products up to 20% by the end of 2012. The company said that all Oscar Mayer white turkey deli meat products have been reduced by at least 15 %; Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Chicken Breast Strips have been reduced by 20 %; Two Kraft Light Dressings have been reduced by more than 30 %; and Original and Reduced Fat Wheat Thins have been reduced by 10 %.
The company claims that it has started offering lower sodium alternatives around 100 products that are either low, reduced or no sodium including Oscar Mayer Lower Sodium Bacon, Planters Lightly Salted Nuts and Hint of Salt crackers including Triscuit, Ritz, Wheat Thins, and Premium.
Rhonda Jordan, president of health & wellness at Kraft Foods, said: We are reducing sodium because it's good for consumers, and, if done properly, it's good for business. A growing number of consumers are concerned about their sodium intake and we want to help them translate their intentions into actions.
