EarthGrains To Bake New Eco-Friendly Bread

Published:02-February-2010

EarthGrains, a baking company in the US, which makes whole grain, natural line of wide pan breads, has said that it will include Eco-Grain wheat in its ingredients.

The company claims that Eco-Grain wheat is grown using farming techniques that benefit the environment and makes up 20% of the whole grains in the baker's brand wide-pan bread. The company said that it will expand its use to EarthGrains Thin Buns later this year.

EarthGrains brand, in partnership with Horizon Milling, will bring the product to market. To support the product introduction, the brand is launching the Plot to Save the Earth, One Field at a Time marketing campaign and inviting the public to join the movement to benefit the environment.

Sara Lee, an American consumer goods company, has said it will also use Eco-Grain wheat in baking its bread. Eco-Grain was developed by Horizon Milling, a joint venture between agribusiness company Cargill and farmer and rancher owned CHS. It is grown using farming practices that reduce fertilizer and it requires less land than organic farming.

The company said that the bread will be available at $2.49 to $4.09 for a 24-ounce loaf. In the beginning, 20% of the wheat used in EarthGrains wide-pan bread will be Eco-Grain wheat, with the company looking to use more Eco-Grain wheat in the bread going forward. The company also intends to use Eco-Grain wheat in its EarthGrains thin buns, a flat sandwich bun, later this year.

Tim Zimmer, vice president of Sara Lee North American Fresh Bakery, said: “EarthGrains bread made with Eco-Grain wheat gives consumers the added knowledge that they are helping the environment with every loaf they purchase, in addition to the great taste and nutrition they expect.

“As part of our movement to help the environment, we’re educating consumers about how to take other small steps to make a positive impact, including supporting the use of innovative agricultural practices.”

The company claims that its line of natural, whole grain breads contain no artificial colors, artificial flavors or chemical preservatives. Now made with 20% Eco-Grain wheat, the varieties include: 100% Whole Wheat, 7-Grain, Wheat Berry with Honey, Multi-Grain, Oat and Double-Fiber Whole Wheat.
