Chiquita installs Biodigester system at Costa Rican facility
Chiquita Brands International, a marketer and distributor of fruit products, has installed a new Biodigester system at its Mundimar unit, located in Guapiles, Costa Rica, as part of the company's sustainable initiatives and focus on carbon neutrality.
The Biodigester system designed by environmentally sustainable systems manufacturer BioSinergia transforms organic material into electrical and heat energy, and also give out valuable byproducts such as nutrient rich fertilizers.
The company claims that its Biodigester makes use of surplus fruit material and processing water from its operations to produce energy for its Guapiles facility and fertilizer to be used by local producers and farmers of palm.
The 'gravity utilizing' design of the Biodigester system enables the circulation of processing water without using electricity, thereby creating a carbon neutral circulation process, Chiquita said.
Chiquita Brands International senior vice president for government affairs and corporate responsibility officer Manuel Rodriguez said that the company's new Biodigester is at the forefront of its global sustainability efforts, and this technology allows the company to harness the full energy potential of fruit materials that previously could not be captured.
“It provides a sustainable energy source for our facility, nutrient rich fertilizer for local farmers and filters processing water, and benefits our company, our communities and our planet,” Rodriguez said.
Chiquita, with operations in nearly 80 countries, processes almost 320 million pounds of bananas, pineapples, papayas, passion fruits and mangoes.
