Barry Callebaut Opens First Chocolate Plant In South America
Barry Callebaut, a Swiss manufacturer of cocoa and chocolate products, has opened its first chocolate plant in South America. The facility is located in Extrema, near Sao Paulo, Brazil. Currently, the company runs nine cocoa and chocolate facilities across the Americas.
Barry Callebaut has made a total investment of nearly $15m. The chocolate producer said that with the beginning of chocolate production in Extrema, there will be around 70 new jobs, which will increase significantly with new lines to be implemented in the future depending on market development.
The new factory will make dark, milk and white chocolate, in addition to compound for artisanal and for industrial customers, but no end-consumer products.
Around 80% of the factory's production will be delivered to the main target customer segment, such as food service market, which includes restaurants, fast food restaurants, bakeries, pastries, in-store bakeries, caterers, hotels, chocolatiers, hospital and school canteens.
For the distribution of food service products manufactured in Extrema, Barry Callebaut signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Bunge, an agribusiness company, in 2009. Every day, Bunge serves about 25,000 points of sale in Brazil.
The company claims that the new chocolate plant in Extrema has been designed to meet the highest quality and food safety standards, and has an annual production capacity of nearly 20,000 tonnes, which can be doubled based on the same infrastructure.
Juergen Steinemann, CEO of Barry Callebaut, said: Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world with a population of more than 190 million, and the country has returned much faster to its earlier growth dynamic than most other economies after the recent economic turmoil.
“With our existing cocoa factory in Ilheus, Bahia, and now our new chocolate factory in Extrema, we are close to our local customers and well positioned to achieve our goal to also become the No 1 chocolate supplier to Brazil's fast-growing food service industry.
