ASR To Buy Tate & Lyle European Cane Sugar Operations

FBR Staff Writer Published 30 June 2010

TGI Friday's restaurants has launched its new Caribbean-inspired Summer menu, which comprises 14 new appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and combo dishes starting at $8.99.

The GBP211m acquisition, which happens to be the third large-scale transaction between the duo, includes a license for use of the Tate & Lyle brand in relation to the sale of sugar.

In 2001, ASR purchased Tate & Lyle North American Sugars (Domino Sugar) and its three refineries, and recently acquired Tate & Lyle Canada (Redpath Sugar) in 2007. The company markets its industrial, consumer and specialty products through Domino Foods, with a brand portfolio of Domino, C&H, Florida Crystals and Redpath.

ASR boasts expertise in the operation of cane sugar refineries and the logistics of the related supply chain, in addition to the marketing of certain retail sugar brands.

Tate & Lyle is a cane sugar producer in the EU. ASR said that the acquisition of Tate & Lyle refineries in London, England, and Lisbon, Portugal, increases its total refining capacity to 6 million metric tons per year.

Luis Fernandez, co-president of ASR, said: The acquisition of Tate & Lyle's European sugar operations is consistent with our strategic vision for expansion in the sugar refining sector. We recognize the importance and history of the Tate & Lyle sugar brand and are proud to add it to our existing brand portfolio.

American Sugar Refining, based in New York, owns and operates six cane sugar refineries across North America, which are located in Yonkers, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Chalmette, Louisiana; Crockett, California; Toronto, Canada; and Veracruz, Mexico.
