Arby's Restaurant Group has said it will stop serving French fries containing trans fat and replace them with fries containing zero grams of trans fat as calculated under FDA nutrition labeling regulations.
The company is switching to a zero grams trans fat cooking oil, and has worked with its French fry suppliers to eliminate the use of hydrogenated oil during the par-frying process at the supplier level. The new French fries and cooking oil are scheduled to be in all US Arby's locations by May 1, 2007.
To accomplish this change, Atlanta-based Arby's changed its frying oil from partially hydrogenated to non-hydrogenated corn oil.
Once implemented, Arby's famous Curly Fries will contain zero grams of trans fat. In addition, over 70% of Arby's required menu items will contain 0.5 grams or less of trans fatty acids.
Arby's Restaurant Group is the franchisor of the Arby's restaurant system, which consists of more than 3,500 restaurants worldwide, and is owner and operator of more than 1,000 of those restaurants located in the US.
