Americans 'not eating enough fruit and vegetables'

Published:22-February-2006

A survey carried out by Del Monte Foods has revealed that most Americans believe they are not eating the recommended daily amount of fruit and vegetables, and do not understand the new dietary guidelines issued by the US government.

The survey, dubbed, 'State of the Nation's Plate', asked US consumers how they thought they scored when it came to healthy eating. While some gave themselves a passing grade, most Americans admitted that they do not eat the recommended 4 1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables daily and do not understand the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Only 10% of Americans are eating the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Only 41% of the population is aware of the new Dietary Guidelines. Residents of Los Angeles (47%) had the greatest awareness, compared to Atlanta (32%) who had the least awareness. In addition, more than half of Americans (58%) are stocking canned fruits in their pantries, while two-thirds are stocking canned vegetables. Rice/pasta is the most frequently stocked item (79%).

"Many Americans want to get serious about eating right - but for some, they don't know where to turn," Apu Mody, managing director of Del Monte Brands commented.
