Ajinomoto Obtains FDA GRAS Status For New Amino Acid
Ajinomoto AminoScience (AAS), a supplier of pharmaceutical and research-grade amino acids in the US, has received GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status for its AjiGRAS-Leucine, from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The maker of amino acids claims that its AjiGRAS-Leucine is the first amino acid to be allowed as an ingredient for use in conventional foods like non-milk and milk based meal replacements, sports and isotonic beverages, vitamin enhanced waters, and meal replacement bars, at levels of 0.5 to 3gm per serving.
According to Ajinomoto, Leucine is an essential amino acid the human body needs for key metabolic functions such as building body protein.
The company noted that, according to researchers, Leucine can act to stimulate protein synthesis, helping to maintain or build muscle and also to help reduce the loss of body protein associated with strenuous exercise, weight loss and even aging.
Jack Heaton, president of Ajinomoto AminoScience, said: “This GRAS status is a significant milestone for the food and beverage manufacturing industry as a whole, to create value-added products for health-conscious consumers.”
Ajinomoto said that AjiGRAS-Leucine from Ajinomoto is produced via fermentation using vegetables as the raw material source. The company asserts that it does not use animal ingredients in production.
Ajinomoto will be showcasing its AjiGRAS-Leucine at the 2010 IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo in Chicago.
Ajinomoto boasts to be the only US facility that manufactures, packages, and stores pharmaceutical grade amino acids. Ajinomoto AminoScience is a part of Ajinomoto USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ajinomoto Co.
