Ancient grains stage a revival in the packaged food industry

Packaged food and beverage markets are seeing a growing influx of new products featuring grains that were favored by civilizations thousands of years ago. According to Datamonitor's Productscan Online database of new products, new food and beverage launches featuring a short list of ancient grains, including chia, have doubled since 2005 as manufacturers jump on the latest health food band wagon.

Edeka: another record year
Germany's largest grocer has witnessed its 2007 sales grow by 4.4% to E30.5 billion, and a 7.0% increase in EBIT to E1.17 billion. A strong start to the year puts the retailer in a good position ahead of the integration of the Plus chain.

Wrigley: acquisition by Mars could threaten Cadbury
Mars and Berkshire Hathaway are set to take over chewing gum manufacturer Wm Wrigley Jr Company. The deal, said to be worth $23 billion, would see the brand acquire extra funding to boost its presence outside of the US. The takeover will help Wrigley to consolidate its position in the UK chewing gum market, and is likely to have negative implications for rival Cadbury Schweppes.

Uniq: feeling the pinch as raw material costs soar
Uniq has become the latest food company to feel the pressure of rising raw material costs, announcing the imminent closure of its Paignton factory and the loss of up to 390 jobs. With rising costs hitting food suppliers around the globe, it is the smaller, private label producers, such as Uniq, that are feeling the impact hardest.

Pot Noodle: retro advertising may not win over the modern man
The Advertising Standards Authority is set to review a Pot Noodle advert that has received complaints over its alleged sexist content. The complaints claim that the advert, which is based around a ballad, depicts women in a demeaning way. Pot Noodle's adverts have created controversy before, and it may be beneficial for the company to recognize the issue of gender complexity for future adverts.
