According to Productscan, 'upscale', followed by 'natural' and 'private label', remained the leading claims on new global food launches between December 2007 and February 2008. In addition, during the period, over 5% of new product launches were tagged as 'organic', with 'quick', 'high vitamins' and 'high fiber' now also appearing on over 4% of new launches.

New food launches by category, December 2007 to February 2008: seasonings add spice to the market
Chocolate candies and spices, extracts & seasonings were the leading categories in new global food launches for the three months to February 2008, according to the Productscan database. Out of the top 10 categories, spices, extracts & seasonings demonstrated the greatest increase in launches, up over a quarter during the period. Aside from meals & entrees, pizza, hot snacks & sandwiches, snacks experienced the greatest decrease in launches during the period, down 12.5%.

Milk and yogurt drinks: top flavors in new global product launches
According to the Productscan database, aside from blend, strawberry and chocolate were the most popular flavors of new milk and yogurt drinks launched worldwide in the 12 months to February 2008. Vanilla is now in fourth place on the leader board, replacing peach, which moves down to seventh place. Pineapple is the only new entrant on the leader board, making an appearance in joint ninth position.

Yogurt: top flavors in new global product launches
According to Productscan, aside from blend, the leading flavor in global yogurt launches in the 12 months to February 2008 was strawberry, followed by peach and vanilla. Vanilla increased in popularity during the timeframe, moving up from seventh to fourth place, while blueberry also showed growth, and now appears at sixth place on the leader board. Meanwhile, banana dropped out of the top 10.

According to Productscan, 'upscale' was the most popular claim featured on new global food launches for the three months to January 2008. The 'natural' claim also remained strong, featuring on over 8% of products, while the number of products claiming to be 'organic' or 'quick' showed a slight increase during the time period.

New food launches by category, November 2007 to January 2008: chocolate growth remains strong
According to Productscan, chocolate candies remained the leading category in new global food launches for the three months between November 2007 and January 2008, during which time, the category saw an increase of more than 12% in new launches. Meanwhile, sauces and gravies showed the strongest growth of over 27%, which left the category at seventh place, while snacks and ice cream recorded notably fewer launches than the same period in the previous year.
